Kundalini yoga is a yoga of awareness that aims to unlock your energy. It differs from other types of yoga in that it focuses more on your mental state than physical movement.
Because of the broad variety of benefits that this form of yoga can deliver, Har Hari Khalsa, DC, offers it here at Transformational Healing Universe in the Pico-Robertson neighborhood of Los Angeles and at our Urban Healing Retreats. To help guide people in their most fruitful Kundalini practice, Dr. Khalsa studied under Yogi Bhajan, a master of this style of yoga.
Understanding Kundalini yoga
Kundalini is a Sanskrit word meaning “coiled snake.” This yoga practice envisions your Kundalini energy as a coiled snake sitting at the base of your spine and seeks to awaken that energy.
To do this, a Kundalini yoga practice blends chanting, breathing, repetitive hand and body movements, and meditation. It’s much less movement-based than many other forms of yoga.
Kundalini practitioners usually wear white.
The benefits of Kundalini yoga
We’ve chosen to integrate Kundalini yoga into our practice at Transformational Healing Universe because it offers the following benefits:
1. Stress relief
Studies have shown that Kundalini yoga can deliver an immediate reduction in your stress levels. It can even help with the symptoms of anxiety disorder.
2. More energy
Because Kundalini yoga aims to unlock the energy inside you, it can help you tap into your inner strength and feel more energized throughout your day.
3. Improved self-awareness
As a mindfulness practice, Kundalini yoga provides you with the opportunity to check in with yourself. This can help you to see yourself more clearly — and, according to studies, more positively.
4. Better focus and thinking ability
Studies show that Kundalini yoga can help with both memory and executive functioning.
5. Boosted mood
Kundalini yoga can help regulate your brain chemistry. This, in turn, can help minimize symptoms of depression, help your body’s systems reach a state of equilibrium, and increase serotonin levels, which is the mood-stabilizing hormone that helps us feel happy.
